How to measure for cat carrier clothing

Keep your clothing measurements and your cat’s compartment requirements separate before choosing a size.

Keep your clothing measurements and your cat’s compartment requirements separate before choosing a size.

Take Cats Out editorial guide · Updated October 28, 2026 · General information, not a product-fit assessment. Photography is AI-generated.

There are two different fit questions: whether the clothing fits you, and whether its pet compartment is suitable for your cat. A larger clothing label is not a published carrying limit. Work through the two checks separately and keep any unanswered product questions on your list.

1. Start with a garment you already find comfortable

Lay a familiar top flat without stretching it. Record the chest width, shoulder width and length using a consistent method. If you plan to wear the vest over another layer, choose a comparison garment that reflects that outfit. The illustration above is AI-generated; use the garment size chart rather than measuring the image.

2. Match the seller’s measuring method

Chest width measured across a flat garment and full chest circumference are different values. Compare like with like; do not automatically double or halve a number unless the maker’s method is clear. Human body measurements and garment measurements also cannot be substituted without the seller’s fit guidance.

Our current supplier charts include measurement tolerances and some values that need clarification. We preserve the listed data on each product page, but do not translate it into an unsupported US-size conversion or personalized fit guarantee.

3. Request the pet-compartment information

Ask for usable internal dimensions and the maker’s method for matching an animal to the compartment. Record your cat’s measurements according to that method. A photograph of another cat cannot tell you the available depth, how the compartment supports the body, or the permitted use.

Common cat carrier hoodie sizing questions

Is a weight limit enough to decide whether my cat fits?

No. Our current garments are intended for cats around 11 lb (5 kg), with a maximum cat weight of 13.2 lb (6 kg). This is our stated use range, not an independent test result. Your cat's body size and the compartment's usable shape still need to be checked. Choosing XL does not raise that limit.

Will a larger hoodie size have a larger cat pouch?

That relationship has not been established for our current listings. We do not yet publish the usable inside width, height and depth for each clothing size. Leave those fields unanswered until they are confirmed for the exact model; a larger chest measurement is not a substitute.

How should I compare centimetres and inches?

Use the same unit and measuring method on both sides of the comparison. One inch equals 2.54 cm. Converting units does not turn a flat garment width into a body circumference or resolve an unclear size-chart label.

Free printable fit worksheet

Keep the garment measurements, cat-space requirements and unanswered questions in one place. The one-page PDF has fields you can fill in with a compatible PDF reader, or print and complete by hand. No email is required.

The worksheet records information; it does not calculate or certify a fit. Use the guide below to check where each measurement comes from.

A record you can keep beside the product chart

Record Where to obtain it Keep separate from
Your comfortable garment’s measurements Your own consistent measurements A general S/M/L assumption
Product garment dimensions and tolerance The exact product’s chart Body measurements
Usable compartment dimensions The maker’s product information The human chest measurement
Animal limits and permitted activities The exact model’s instructions Another brand’s limits

What to do if a number is missing

Ask before ordering rather than choosing the largest label and hoping it resolves the uncertainty. Both garments are intended for cats around 11 lb (5 kg), up to a maximum of 13.2 lb (6 kg). Contact us if you need a compartment measurement for your cat. That is why our selection guide offers a style starting point rather than a weight-only calculator.
